The Good Things of January 23, 2014

So many great things happened today! Here they are, listed, for your accessing pleasure:

  • Starting at around 3:00 in the morning, I tore out of a sleepless torpor and dove into a blank Word document, eventually putting together my first draft at a query letter for DC (my novel project). It’s by no means ready to be sent out to prospective agents but I had a good writer friend look at it first thing the next morning (so a few hours later) and he thought it had some strong sections, which is so exciting!
  • I contacted my old writing professor from high school to see if she remembered me, and if she’d send any prospective clients my way so long as I’m in the area. Her response was so heartfelt and lovely, and we’re grabbing coffee tomorrow. This is the lady that first introduced me to The Wonderful World of Writing, and getting a chance to catch up with her is a very big deal for me. Plus she’s a great resource for honing my tutoring and teaching skills.
  • After wallowing in my manuscript for the greater part of the week, I promised myself I’d spend today doing professional things. My university’s office of career services has done a superlative job ignoring me for the past week, so finally I took my resume into my own hands and breathed new life into it. I mean it — new life. Applications, look out.
  • One of my clients, who has a great middle-grade YA novel in the works, sent me their revised synopsis after a brief hiatus for the holidays. I’ll probably delve into it tonight or tomorrow because I honestly can’t wait to get back into this project. It’s an honest joy getting to watch another’s work evolve and become vivid, and this specific client has been a joy to work with.
  • I rediscovered Sara Bareilles’ 2012 EP ‘Once Upon Another Time,’ which, if you haven’t heard it, is a stunning set of songs. Everything about it is gorgeous.
  • I changed my desktop background. Superfluous? Sure, maybe to all you Corporate Sheeple of the Void, but my life is a life of private riots, and major aesthetic changes definitely make the cut. I’ll post the photo below since it’s one of my own, and it really is a pretty view:

Is that the image of serenity? Is it not? Look me in the eyes and tell me that the swishing grass, distant mountains, and mottled clouds makes you feel inwardly tumultuous. You can’t, can you?
